Skype coming to an Xbox near you!

Today Microsoft announced they are acquiring Skype for $8.5 billion. Sources at Reuters reported last week that Google and Facebook were also in the mix trying to acquire Skype. While Microsoft has video chat features in its messenger service (through Windows Live), the service does not work for some phones, whereas Skype has versions of its program available for iPhone and iPad.

So, what does this mean for Xbox 360 users? Perhaps in the not so distant future we will see an update to the Xbox 360 Dashboards to integrates Skype.

According to Skype CEO, Tony Bates "I believe this acquisition is the very best way to extend Skype’s reach and will allow us to bring real-time video and voice communications to more people around the world than ever before. The combination of Skype and Microsoft will directly benefit all of you who use Skype by ushering in a new era of generative ways for everyone to communicate."

I'm an avid Skype user and I'm anxious and excited to see where this acquisition takes the company.
